Scottsdale has a rich history rooted in the old west and embodies its official motto, “The West’s Most Western Town”. But don’t be fooled by its small-town western heritage, Scottsdale is currently one of the nation’s 100 largest cities.  And the warm sunny weather and the gorgeous desert sky are just the beginning of what makes Scottsdale great!

While in Scottsdale, you can enjoy some of the best golf destinations as well as art galleries and museums.  Scottsdale is a hot spot for nightlife and cuisine, and there are always festivals and outdoor events to peak all interests.

Is It Worth the Move?

There is no doubt Scottdale is a top destination to visit but is it worth the move?  Aside from the gorgeous weather, resorts, golf courses, and abundance of outdoor activities, Scottsdale offers much to its residents.  Scottsdale boasts some of the best school districts in the state.  There are an abundance of private, public, and charter institutions which offer college preparatory curricula and boast high test scores. Scottsdale is also one of the top places in the country for job seekers, being named “Best Place in America to Find a Job” by WalletHub. Many industries such as high-tech, tourism, aviation, and healthcare are booming in Scottsdale.  Salaries in Scottsdale are also higher than in many other U.S. cities.  While Scottsdale is known for being expensive, it is still one of the most affordable luxurious cities in the country.

Location Location Location

Sunny weather and million-dollar homes may come to mind when you hear Scottsdale, which may seem out of reach.  However, Scottsdale is large at 31 miles long and 11.5 miles wide, so there are many different areas to consider when buying a home.  Comparing North Scottsdale to South Scottsdale may help you see the variety in home prices, lifestyle offerings, and cost of living.

South Scottsdale

South Scottsdale has been considered more working class, and home prices can be one-third of what you will see in the more affluent North Scottsdale neighborhoods.  South Scottsdale homes are single-level ranch-style designs built in the 50’s and 60’, but also newer developments of high-end apartment and condo communities.  This area provides greenbelts and parks and proximity to Tempe, Downtown Phoenix, and the airport.  Living in South Scottsdale also provides easy access to the historical shops and art scene of Old Town Scottsdale, not to mention world-class dining and high-end shopping as well.

North Scottsdale

North Scottsdale is home to more recently built houses, masterplaned, and gated communities.  The oldest homes in this area were built in the 80s and 90s, with many more built in the last decade. North Scottsdale residents enjoy more open space and dedicated natural areas and closer proximity to several mountainous areas.  Most neighborhoods are estate-size homes and lots – many of which are custom-built. Home to world-renowned golf courses, expansive resorts, exquisite restaurants, stunning hiking trails, and shopping at some of the most exclusive destinations, North Scottsdale really has it all.

By the Numbers

According to payscale.com, as of 2022 the cost of living in Scottsdale, Arizona is 15% higher than the national average.   Housing expenses contribute to that average, as the median home cost is $567,312.  Transportation expenses such as public transport and gas prices are 3% lower than the national average.  There are financial advantages to working and living in Scottsdale, including proximity to other Arizona cities, as well as a booming commercial business.
